Background & Current Design
The current Poke One menu attempts to inform customers the process for a build-your-own poke bowl. However, the design is outdated, with clashing colors and a clunky layout, rendering it confusing for customers to understand.
User Insight
Since I worked here as a front kitchen dining staff, I had first hand experience engaging with customers and hearing them voice their concerns regarding the menu layout. Most of the problems revolved around messing up the order of the steps or unknowingly missing out on topping choices because it was not listed on the menu.
Ideation & Iterations
I started out with creating quick sketches of menu thumbnails to test various layout options with some users before narrowing down on a few that would provide the most effective and efficient ordering process. Additionally, I worked on reimagining the logo design to better reflect the brand name.
Redesign Concept
In order to create a seamless build-your-own experience, I was tasked to simplify the menu and emphasize the order of the steps to correlate with the layout of the restaurant.
The exact progression of steps is delineated through the large numbers and lists explicitly stating the choices customers can make at each stage in order to personalize their own bowls. Often times, customers would miss the veggies section because it was hidden under the protein options of “Step 2” in the original menu. For this reason, I decided to make “veggies” its own step in my design.
I created a boundary around the build-your-own steps in order to separate it from the non related drinks and desserts section of the menu.
Brand
The logo was redesigned in order to place more emphasis on the “One” in the name of the restaurant, an aspect that makes it unique from other poke restaurants. The sans serif fonts display the friendly and welcoming feel of the restaurant, which reflects the easy to navigate ordering process.
To keep familiarity with the old menu, I extracted one orange color from the original palette to focus on, as well as maintaining the slogan at the bottom of the page.
Next Steps
To explore this menu redesign further, I want to create an app that allows customers to virtually personalize their poke bowl before arriving at the restaurant to pick it up at a specified time. Additionally, user testing with the physical menu and online app will bring up problems and improvements that can be made in the redesigns.
